i thought they just tryed to regain areas of bosnia like the croats did in bits with high numbers of croats out of fear for the serb and croat population if bosnia became a muslim state

Yes. They killed about 10.000 people, and when Croatia got a proper army, the serbs got a whopping and ran away. It's easy to kill civilians, but hard to fight Croatian army
