Pepperberg did work Alex pretty hard - as she herself worked. But she really loved him. The morning he died, the phone kept ringing with reporters wanting a statement. Haosking1 - You're missing the point. This bird is performing mental tasks that were considered strictly human traits or, at very best, only achievable by heavily trained primates. And if you think humans "rule" the world, think again. We only live here by geological consent. Mother Nature could wipe us out in short order. For all our technology, we cannot stop natural disasters. Anyway, the point is that animals are smarter than we (or scientists) used to believe. Alex was proof of that.
