If the whale would've been even the least bit serious, there would be bleeding. But no, it was just playing. At the moment it understood that its playmate couldn't survive without oxygen, its priority was to get her back to save her life. Whales do understand. We should, too.

Thank you Hookipagirl for proving what happened : This was just a play maneuver that cetaceans(the group that contains dolphins) often do to each other. The Pilot Whale was unaware that humans can't hold their breath as long as they can, since its VERY rare that they even have any contact with humans. And to all you people who MUST call these animals dolphins, SHUT UP. The narrorator was simply calling the animal by its name: shortfinned pilot WHALE. pilot /WHALLLE/. So there you have it.

Dolphins are officially classed as small toothed whales, yes. But there is a distinction in popular culture between whales and dolphins and Pilot whales, both species, are delphinidae. However, how many people like to hear about dolphins going after people? Not many. But whales...they don't have so much of the "cute and cuddly" mumbo jumbo attached to them.

yes but dolphins are a species of whale. The largest dolphin is the Orca... I'm not sure if Pilot Whales fall under the 'dolphin' category, but either way, dolphins are still a species of whale. So it's not a big deal if they call them dolphins or whales really. Just like a great dane is as much as a dog as a chihuahua... they're just 'breeds' of dogs. A dolphin is sort of like a 'breed' of whale, I suppose, though I don't think the word 'breed' properly suffices for this certain... thing. x_x
