I think there were multiple attempts at making The Mask movie a horror or comedy/horror, but in the end they just couldn't make it work. I think they went through about four scripts before they decided to scrap it and go for the hero idea.

I was kind of annoyed that the movie played down the Mask's psychotic tendencies and his penchant for extreme violence.But Jim Carrey was absolutely perfect the comedy they tuned it into.
