Unless you have a sever cleft lip playing the flute shouldnt be a problem. One of the reason why music teachers tell you "your lips are too big" ect is because they have to spread people out among the instruments... you cant have 20 flute players in a 40 person ensemble.People play out from the side of their mouth just as well as people who play from the center.If you want to play flute, dont let anyone discourage you and force you to clarinet or sax!Its one of the hardest instruments.

Piccolo is not harder than flute "to play", people only make you think it is. The reason is it easier to play is because the embrasure variant is less on a piccolo and much more varying on a flute especially when playing the bottom register and switching to the top.The only thing more "difficult" with playing the piccolo is keeping it in tone when playing the higher notes.Any flute player knows that high notes go sharp on flute, and more so on piccolo.Piccolo is easier, im telling you.

If all you can play is 5 notes before having to take a breath something is wrong with your embrasure.They key to playing the flute well is knowing what is too much air and what is too little. As you play more and more you will naturally find the balance between the two.Too little air and it sounds pinched.Too much and its airy with no tone.

Piccolo is harder than flute, but you should definitely start with flute, not piccolo. Learn the basics on flute before advancing to piccolo. I guess it is possible to start on piccolo, just harder! By the way, lip shape doesn't really have anything to do with it. Some lip shapes make making an embrochure a little difficult at first, but it doesn't stop you.

You're amazing! I play beginner flute but I'm terrible because I can never get enough air to play more then five notes without taking a breathe.
