(To Ploob05)I don't listen to a lot of modern extreme metal, but most/all of older extreme metal albums (80s to early 90s) don't have any problem with overcompression whatsoever. I think you're missing the point, especially when you say "expecting it to have crystal clear, top-40 production", because most top-40 songs have the same problem of overcompression, but they're commercial pop songs so it doesn't matter as much.

i dont know but if you are a hard rock metal fan you should listen to hard music loud i can listen to death magnetic at maximum and it fells good you have to have strong ears

The CD sounds just... horrible. All the dynamics are gone, much of the treble has been lost, etc. It sounds flat and dull.

wow you can totally tell the difference:o!!!

i prefer the C.D, it jumps out of the speakers and kills you!

v Not really. I like to think I have a decent enough set of ears to tell the difference between these two sound clips.I just don't have OCD, when it comes to mixing. :D

Well Ploob05, as you said on a message board you listen to music with a "decent set of earphones, so that you can actually hear all of what you're listening to." Your argument is invalid on this issue then. People at home with loudspeakers and a decent setup can notice a lot more detail than you. Those systems are not as easy to get away with flaws.I only posting this to point this out other users arguing against you on this issue.

My point is, in a genre like metal, I believe that people get too caught up in the mixing of an album, expecting it to have crystal clear, top-40 production.Just listen to the *tunes*, guys.
