I was there aboard by sailboat and had a dingy. You could probably find someone with a boat to take you there as its not far.

The Sapona was a cargo steamship launched in 1920 and is the sister ship of the Cape Fear. In 1926 the Sapona ran aground on this reef during a hurricane and during WW2 was used for target practice by the Air Force and Navy. The Sapona wreck was used in a 1977 movie called "Shock Waves".

The Sampona is a great wreck to visit. The fact that the ship was made out of concrete is mind boggling. Unfortunately during a hurricane in 2005 or 2006, the back end that used to stand out of the water collapsed and is not visible out of the water anymore. Does anyone know which hurricane did this? |
