i would think it goes into a direct box of some sort since the M1 is passive. it's very weak without one. it also will sound very flat when plugged straight into an amp.I personally got the lr baggs M1A which is the active version. It sounds the same but doesn't require a pre or direct box. but you can still use it with them if you want.
